Dirty Dancing is one of my all-time favorite movies – I’ve probably watched it at least 50 times!
There are a few deleted scenes and extended moments from Dirty Dancing (1987) that fans like you — who’ve seen it 50+ times! — often seek out. While most didn’t make it into the final film, some have surfaced in DVD extras or anniversary editions.
🔥 Notable Deleted Scenes from Dirty Dancing:
1. Johnny’s Original Introduction Was Longer
In the extended cut, Johnny (Patrick Swayze) has a slightly longer, moodier entrance, showing more tension between him and the resort staff before he meets Baby. It gave more depth to his “outsider” role.
2. Penny and Baby Bonding
There was a tender moment where Penny (Cynthia Rhodes) and Baby (Jennifer Grey) talk after Penny’s botched abortion. It showed more vulnerability and solidarity between the two women.
3. Extended Dance Rehearsals
Some extended dance training scenes between Johnny and Baby were trimmed for time but showed their growing attraction and Baby’s clumsiness (which was partly real — Jennifer Grey improvised a lot).
4. Watermelon Scene – Uncut
The scene where Baby says “I carried a watermelon” originally included more dialogue and awkward interactions before she gets pulled into the dance room.
5. Alternate Ending
There’s no fully filmed alternate ending, but early script drafts had a more subdued closing instead of the big lift performance. Luckily, they went with the now-iconic final scene!
